Small Spooky
Business Initiative

Americans spend more than twelve BILLION dollars a year on Halloween decorations, candy, and other spooky-themed items. In July of 2025, members of the Society of Spooky Ladies began an initiative to shift our “code orange” alerts away from big box stores and instead support small spooky businesses of all types and sizes.

What is a “Spooky Store?”

We define a “spooky” small business as any cool or unusual shop that embraces the unconventional.

This includes brands featuring products, services, or spaces tied to Halloween and horror cinema, as well as alternative health, wellness, and spiritual practices like Wicca, paganism, or witchcraft.

If it’s beautifully bizarre, uniquely themed, or wonderfully strange, it belongs here.

Have you been dreaming about turning your spooky obsession into a small spooky business?

Maybe you've been making things for friends, collecting vintage treasures, creating art, reading tarot, crafting magical goods, or thinking, “I wonder if I could actually make a business out of this?” Starting a small business is exciting, but it also takes planning, persistence, flexibility, and a willingness to learn as you go.

Our Small Spooky Business Readiness Assessment is designed to help you figure out where you are right now. There are no right or wrong answers, and you don't need to already have a business plan, a logo, or everything figured out. Answer 11 quick questions about how you approach decisions, challenges, risk, learning, customers, and taking action. Your results will give you a snapshot of your current entrepreneurial readiness and suggest some next steps to help you move forward.

It only takes a few minutes, and your score isn't a verdict. It's a starting point.

The Directory of Spooky Stores

The stigma associated with the spooky culture can make it challenging for small businesses to properly market their stores, especially in small, rural, or conservative communities. We want to help you connect with these stores, so we are compiling a list of all the small, spooky businesses we can find. There are only 2 rules:

  1. They have to sell spooky stuff (things that you won’t find at target like oddities, morbid stuff, sassy and sarcastic things, vintage stuff, etc) all year long.

  2. They have to have a physical storefront. Sorry, if you just have an online store or do pop-up shops we can’t include you yet.

Help grow the directory by adding your favorite spooky store or spooky service provider!

The Directory of Small Spooky Stores is only available to members of the society with an “All Access” Membership.
