Small Spooky Business Initiative

Americans spend more than twelve BILLION dollars a year on Halloween decorations, candy, and other spooky-themed items.

In July of 2025, Society members began an initiative to shift our “code orange” alerts away from big box stores and instead support small spooky businesses.

The Map of Spooky Stores

The stigma associated with the spooky culture can make it challenging for small businesses to properly market their stores, especially in small, rural, or conservative communities. We want to help you connect with these stores, so we are compiling a list of all the small, spooky businesses we can find. There are only 2 rules:

  1. They have to sell spooky stuff (more on this later) all year long.

  2. They have to have a physical storefront.

If you’d like to help us grow the list you can add your favorite store by filling out this form.

What is a “spooky” Business?

We are identifying a small business as “spooky” if they feature products, services, or create environments that are commonly associated with Halloween, horror movies, and other spirituality-based practices (wicca, paganism, witchcraft) or simply because they are a cool and unusual store.

As you might imagine, the list includes a wide variety of businesses from traditional metaphysical stores and apothecaries to hair salons and even a black cat rescue.

Give me that list!
